Top High School Football Teams and Football Fundraisers

The top high school football teams don’t usually have money problems. That’s not the case with most teams that depend on high school football fundraisers. When you have one of the top football teams in the country like the teams below money is usually easy to come by.

Growing up in San Antonio during the 1970s I witnessed some of the greatest high school football ever played.  I did not play any of it but that is alright because I had a great view to see some of the areas greatest players during the years 1971-1975.

The first team that I really have memories of was the Robert E. Lee high school teams of this era.  Names like Tommy Krammer, Pat Rocket, and Richard Osborne are some of the few that really stick out. Tommy Krammer went on to have a great college carrier at Rice and played some 13 seasons for Minnesota I the NFL.  He led Robert E. Lee to the state title in 1971 and the semi finals in 1972.  Richard Osborne also played at Rice and for the Philadelphia Eagles, in the NFL.  Pat Rocket went on to become a minor league baseball player but man could that guy run.  This Rice team was years ahead of what others were trying to do at the time.  They could really throw the ball down the field and had receivers with great speed and hands.  We were so thrilled to beat them in 1972 as it was the first time any school from our Northside District had ever beaten a Lee team in football.

The team that I really hold dear in my heart though was the 1974 John Jay Mustangs from San Antonio.  This team did not win state or anything like that but at one time they had probably the most feared backfield in the country.  This team ran a veer type offense led by quarterback Terri Williams.  His duo of backs were non other the  Billy Taylor and Thomas Lott.  Billy Taylor went on to star at Texas Tech University and then played for the New York Giants.  Thomas Lott played and started at quarterback for the University of Oklahoma.  Prior to Williams being hurt the running game enjoyed by John Jay was nearly unstoppable.  Unfortunately, a knee injury forced Thomas Lott to move to quarterback.  While this worked out well for Thomas and the University of Oklahoma it was crushing to a young high school kid to see this fantastic duo of running backs broken up.  We played very well but I believe that Churchill actually won the district title that year.  If you can believe it, back in those days only one team advanced to the playoffs.
